The Lady above all ladies - 500 years
In1506 Leonardo da Vinci decided that he should stop working on his most famous painting; Mona Lisa. He was then 54 years old, and his birthday in 1452 was April 15th.
Leonardo never left the painting and they say he carried the portrait of Francesco del Giocondo´s wife with him all his life. We congratulate da Vinci on his birthday.
Leonardo da Vinci
The painting on this blog is not by Leonardo. It is Velazquez´s La Gioconda. Velazquez worked many years in Venice, Florence and Rome and made many imitations of masterpieces during his education. This work can be seen in Prado, Madrid.
Many artists have made their own versions of Mona Lisa. One of them is Patrice Murciano,
and I really like his modern work from 2001.

I know that you look upon Leonardo from the point of view of an artist. With my own background, I tend to prefer to look upon him from the point of view of a scientist. In that connection I would recommend the book Leonardo - The first scientist by Michael White. It is exactly what the title says it is, but along the way you also get a sideview of his artistic career that is quite interesting. Also about the uncertainty concerning who Mona Lisa really was.
